Why Bills Have 'Best-Case Scenario' at Backup QB
USA TODAY Sports

Few people know Buffalo Bills quarterbacks Josh Allen and Kyle Allen better than their quarterback coach, Jordan Palmer.

Palmer played seven years in the NFL, including three with the Cincinnati Bengals backing up his brother, Carson Palmer. With his knowledge of the two, Jordan opened up on the dynamic between the two and how it could be helpful for Josh. Jordan even compared their relationship to the one between him and his brother.

"When you have that relationship, you can say what needs to be said because there's no concern with how it's going to affect our relationship," Jordan said on One Bills Live.

Jordan talked about how Josh and Kyle's relationship goes back to when they entered the league in 2018. The two had grown so close that Kyle was at the first playoff game of Josh's career when Buffalo played the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

Kyle had started 12 games earlier that season for the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

"He bought a ticket and sat in the stands and watched his buddy play two days after exit interviews," Jordan said. "This is a really cool bond where Josh's success is absolutely in the best interest of Kyle and that's the dynamic you want."

Kyle is entering his sixth season in the NFL after previously playing for the Panthers (2018-2019), Washington Commanders (2020-2021) and Houston Texans (2022).

Kyle competed with Matt Barkley to earn the Bills' backup quarterback role. After a shaky first preseason game, Kyle played better in the second and third games and beat out Barkley, who was cut with an injury settlement.

Jordan also lauded Kyle's ability to pick up Buffalo's offense in a short period of time. With Kyle's relationship with Josh and his understanding of his role as a backup, Jordan thinks he can be everything Buffalo needs.

"Kyle is a brilliant young football mind," Jordan said..."I think Kyle's going to be the best-case scenario as a backup because he's got a lot of starts, he's played well in tough situations and he's going to be able to be candid and honest with somebody that he loves and respects."
