Former Ravens Linebacker Pernell McPhee Joins Michigan Coaching Staff

McPhee spent seven seasons with the Ravens and 11 seasons in the NFL, accumulating 38 sacks as an outside linebacker before retiring after the 2021 season. 

Baltimore's 2011 fifth-round draft pick played under Michigan's new defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, from 2019 to 2021. Following the signing, former Ravens starting offensive lineman Matt Skura weighed in on the hire. 

"Great hire! Was fortunate to be a teammate of his, and Phee has an infectious personality that will energize the players, staff, and organization," Skura wrote on X.

Michigan is coming off of its first national championship in 26 years, largely due to its stellar defense. This defense figures to continue being dominant following the addition of McPhee, who was said to have coaching characteristics during his time in the NFL. 

Interestingly enough, McPhee won a Super Bowl by beating the Wolverines' championship head coach, Jim Harbaugh, when he won with the Ravens back in 2013 and defeated Harbaugh's San Francisco 49ers. 

Next season will be the first time in eight years that Harbaugh isn't coaching Michigan following his return to the NFL this offseason when he agreed to become the new head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. 

Martindale and McPhee will attempt to help lead the Wolverines win its second straight National Championship, which hasn't been done by a Big Ten team since Nebraska in 1994 and 1995.
