Cowboys sign WR Tyron Johnson, release Antonio Callaway

The Dallas Cowboys have signed wide receiver Tyron Johnson and cut Antonio Callaway.

According to sources, Callaway was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for speeding last weekend. He had a warrant for allegedly driving with a suspended license and failing to pay.

Dallas signed Callaway to its practice squad after a workout in November but didn't dress for any games.

The Cowboys signed him to a reserve/futures contract in January.

Now he's gone.

So with that done and over with, the team held a workout for a handful of players on Monday, and the team signed Johnson to take his place for now.

The others the Cowboys had in for workouts included N'Keal Harry and Lynn Bowden. Plus quarterbacks Jacob Eason and Bryce Perkins, and two defensive backs, Jordan Miller and Thakarius Keyes.

As of now, Johnson is the only player the team signed.

The fifth-year wideout has spent time with nine different teams.

A little worrisome. Worrisome because Johnson hasn't been able to hang around with a club for an extended period.

He is only 27 and has run a 4.36 40, but with the nine teams Johnson has played for, he has only appeared in four games.

After going undrafted in 2019, the only real playing time he saw came with the Chargers during his rookie year. They promoted him to the active roster in October.

All three touchdowns and 398 of those 422 total yards came during that year with Los Angeles.

With all that said, Johnson will at least be on the roster for the minicamp this week. He takes that seat for now.

I think the reason he continues to get a lot of chances is because of his speed. He can flat-out run.

A 4.3 40 will get you many chances in the NFL, and here we are again.

If you have read any of my other recent posts, I have talked a lot about the wide receiver No. 4 being wide open on the depth chart.

Maybe Johnson can step right in and challenge the likes of Jalen Tolbert, Simi Fehoko, and Dennis Houston for that spot.

Let's see how this plays out, but right now, he is just a body the team can bring to camp.

Because of that speed, he showed flashes with the Charges; let's hope he brings that to Dallas. Might not even be a bad option if they just want to use him a time or two for a go-route or something similar.

After the mandatory minicamp this week, the team will have another round of OTA's on June 13-15.

Finally, near the end of July, the Cowboys will host training camp before the team's first preseason game on August 12th.

A lot of questions are going to be answered not only this week, but over the next month and half for both sides of the football.

Looking forward to who wins the battle for the last wideout spot on the depth chart. It would be hard to imagine it being Johnson, but you never know.
