Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence undergoes foot surgery, out six to eight weeks

The Dallas Cowboys were delivered a latest crushing blow on Wednesday when star defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence suffered a broken foot in practice.

Per an update provided by Todd Archer of ESPN, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that Lawrence underwent surgery Thursday. While McCarthy didn't declare a timeline for Lawrence's potential return to action, Archer reports the two-time Pro Bowl selection is expected to miss six to eight weeks of the campaign.

Lawrence tallied five total tackles and one forced fumble in last Thursday's Week 1 loss at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Obviously, losing DeMarcus, he's a prime-time player for us. I thought he had a nice start in Tampa," McCarthy said. "You hate to see these injuries to any of your guys, but what it does is it gives opportunities to the other players. How we will spread that out will be done through game plan. We'll work on that today, tomorrow and Saturday. Specifically, we'll get into that when we play the game."

Fellow defensive end Randy Gregory reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, and McCarthy suggested Wednesday that Gregory will be out for 10 days and Sunday's contest at the Los Angeles Chargers even though he is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

League rules allow fully vaccinated players who test positive for COVID-19 to return to team activities if they are asymptomatic and produce two negative virus tests 24 hours apart.

Archer wrote unproven commodities Dorance Armstrong and Tarell Basham may start at defensive end versus the Chargers.

The Chargers beat the Washington Football Team 20-16 last Sunday.
